Yoshitsugu Shinohara: A Eulogy

YOSHITSUGA SHINOHARA 8TH DAN SHIHAN

I recently learned of the passing of a great Wado Sensei who was my instructor for a number of years. Better known as Yoshi when not in the dojo he was a charismatic and knowledgeable instructor in the UKKF, UKKW and EKA. This is sad news for all of his students past and present and my sympathy goes out to his family.

Sensei Yoshi was a frequent visitor to my dojo at Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset and a gentlemanly house guest. During my time with the EKA as General Secretary we used to spend a lot of time on the phone and writing letters (pre email!) discussing courses, gradings and unfortunately karate politics. He was always open to discussion outside of the dojo.

Over the years we became friends, however as frequently happens, we went our different ways only to meet up again at a competition some years later and this led to more visits to our dojo.

There will be many students of Wado-ryu that have had the benefit and joy of his teachings and we can all be proud to have counted Yoshi as an instructor and mentor.

Yasuraka ni nemuru Sensei.
