The following statement is from Steve Coupland, the President of the EKF (English Karate Federation) on Coronavirus and what this will mean for martial arts.
Dear Colleagues
As some of you may be aware the Government have allowed contact training
to resume for elite sport. This is largely for professional sports people, and in some circumstances, those involved in the Olympic programmes.
For absolute clarity, Community Sport has not been given the go ahead to return and the advice is that dojo remain closed. I think most will find sports centres, schools, and various facilities will remain closed so will have little choice.
The EKF is continually seeking guidance on the issue of a return and what that will look like once we get the go ahead. Once we know more, we will publish clear guidance and advice, as well as an Action plan going forward. We fully recognise there will be some significant rebuilding required.
We know this is extremely tough on everyone involved in karate, and for that matter all sport. However, we must urge you all to follow Government guidelines.
Again, for absolute clarity, we do not have the permissions to re-open our clubs nor is the EKF suggesting or agreeing our clubs open. I would also remind everyone that should you ignore this advice, then you seriously run the risk of negating your insurance cover.
There will be further notice at the end of this week around the Lockdown issue. In the meantime keep safe and keep those around you safe.
Steve Coupland
EKF President
