The EKF are becoming increasingly aware of the use of online training during the 'lockdown', which we know is proving beneficial for many and an initiative the EKF support. However, we would like to offer a few words of caution, and take the opportunity to remind everyone of some of the risks of online training and online activities generally.
Whilst the overwhelming vast majority of those offering courses are legitimate, there are some that will seek to exploit the situation and potentially present risk to our younger members and adults at risk. We urge everyone to take a few simple measures to protect themselves and any of their children or adults at risk:
1. Check any online instructor is legitimate
2. Ask to see their DBS (disclosure and barring service) certificate. Be sure to see the whole certificate, checking the date, and all the parts. If in doubt walk away from the course.
3. If your child is taking part in a class, stay in the room with them with a clear view of the screen. If you see something you are not happy with, then cease transmission, end the session immediately, and report to the EKF, or local authorities. Should the instructor ask you to leave, end the session, and report.
4. Be sure that any monies paid is done through a traceable and secure method. Show exactly the same caution you would for online shopping and similar. Do not under any circumstances give private banking details.
5. Avoid exaggerated claims that might be made by the course leader. It is unlikely that one session with them will change your life, or improve your skills to an unrecognisable level.
6. Do not give out personal information to unknown people. Indeed, avoid giving out details period. Protect your data and protect yourself. Remember, when you are training online you are effectively allowing strangers in your home. Consider what they see when they see you!!!
The EKF's overriding advice would be to only 'attend' online courses of instructors within your own group, or within the EKF family. We know these are immensely challenging, difficult times for everyone, and we all have to innovate to get through them. However, in doing so, we must also continue to protect ourselves and those around us.
Stay safe and keep those around you safe.
